Tent Fumigation FAQs

Q: Will fumigation eliminate ALL the termites and pests in my structure?

ANSWER: Not necessarily.

If you have an infestation of subterranean termites, these will require a separate type of treatment, in order to create a barrier between your structure and their nest in the ground.

Under optimum conditions, your target pest will be dead or obviously dying by the end of the fumigation. However, drywood termites can remain alive as long as a week after receiving a lethal dose of a fumigant.

In addition, lethal doses vary for different pests, depending on the type of fumigant used. It is entirely possible for other household pests (such as spiders, cockroaches, geckos, etc.) to survive a fumigation, when performed with the dosage used for drywood termites. Also, even if a fumigation appears to have killed off most of these types of pests, since fumigants have no residual effect, these types of pests can reinfest after a fumigation.

Note: Drywood termites and some wood-destroying beetles generate small pellets or dust that may remain in the tunnels after the insects are killed. You may continue to notice these signs after a fumigation. This does not necessarily mean the fumigation failed. If you have any questions about the success of your treatment, contact your pest control company immediately.

Q: Who can enter a structure while it is being fumigated?

ANSWER: Chemicals used in fumigation are lethal! Exposure to fumigants in a structure being fumigated, even for a few minutes, will result in death or serious injury.

Absolutely NO ONE can enter a structure until it has been certified safe for reentry by the licensee in charge of the fumigation. Warning signs are posted in plainly visible locations on or in the immediate vicinity of all entrances.

To ensure that even the owner or tenant cannot reenter a structure, the company is required to put a secondary lock on all outside doors that only the company can open. These locks are typically devices such as padlocks, keyway locks, or deadbolts from the inside–which prevent opening of the structure by anyone but the licensee in charge.

Q: What if I continue to see termite droppings? Does this mean the treatment didn’t work?

ANSWER: The “droppings” that you see as a result of drywood termite activity are fecal pellets. These hard, dry pellets will remain within the termite galleries long after the termites are dead. If you break open a damaged area, droppings will be present. Droppings may also fall out due to vibrations in or around the structure–which can happen weeks, months, or even years after the termites are no longer active.

Q: How much does a treatment cost?

ANSWER: Treatment cost will vary depending upon the size and accessibility of the structure and the extent of the infestation. We also need to know what type of termites you have and what method of treatment is required. These are the factors that your inspector will discuss with you at the time of your inspection. Once the subject property has been inspected, the inspector can then give you a cost estimate, with no obligation to have the work done.

We'll solve your pest or termite problem.
